Blackpool World Fireworks Championships 2024

If there’s one event that lights up the skies over the UK’s most iconic seaside resort, it’s the World Fireworks Championship Blackpool 2024. Scheduled for September 7, September 21, and October 5, this annual extravaganza promises to be a visual feast for spectators from all over the world. Taking place over the beach in front of the famous Blackpool Tower, the championship transforms the night sky into a kaleidoscope of color, sound, and excitement set to music. The beach itself is usually closed off to allow a safe operating area for the fireworks technicians.

Colourful displays on Blackpool’ promenade

The town is usually very busy for the free fireworks events and it’s usually impossible to drive around the town immediately before and after the fireworks as the sheer volume of people on the promenade overwhelms the local traffic network.

It’s best to plan well ahead and expect delays and standing traffic. Public transport can get backlogged too so ensure you’ve got options. Trams are also often running slower simply sue to safety concerns from members of the public close to the tracks. There will be a small army of stewards out to ensure everything runs smoothly and also to ensure no-one is hit by a passing tram or emergency vehicle.

The event often attracts massive crowds and dispersal afterwards can take time

A Premier Fireworks Festival

The World Fireworks Championship is one of Blackpool’s most anticipated events, drawing in crowds from across the country and beyond. Each year, it features pyrotechnic teams from around the globe competing to showcase their best displays. These teams are the very best in the business, renowned for their creativity, precision, and artistry in the field of fireworks. The competitors put on a jaw-dropping display of lights and music, choreographed to perfection.

The Western train and others will likely be operating on the night.

Perfect Viewing Spots

For those eager to catch the action, the best viewing area is along Central Promenade, between Central Pier and North Pier. This prime location offers an unobstructed view of the fireworks as they explode over the beach and sea. Many spectators also choose to arrive early to secure a spot and soak in the lively atmosphere, often enjoying the street performances, music, and food stalls that line the promenade. It will be windy so it’s best to dress for the elements and remember to bring a brolly just in case. You will also find loads of street traders selling flashy noisy implements that your children will covet… Be prepared and bring some cash in smaller denominations just in case.

Crowds leaving after a fireworks event on the promenade

Tips for Visitors

  • Arrive Early: The promenade can get crowded, so arrive early to secure the best viewing spot.
  • Dress Appropriately: Evenings by the sea can be chilly, so bring warm clothing and a brolly.
  • Plan Your Journey: Blackpool is well-connected by public transport, but roads can be busy on event nights. Consider using public transport or walking if you’re staying nearby – however public transport can become quickly overwhelmed so ensure you have a plan if you need to wait somewhere in the town centre for the crowds to disperse.

A Celebration Beyond Fireworks

There’s loads too see in the town centre

While the fireworks are the main event, Blackpool offers plenty more to enjoy. Visitors can explore the town’s many attractions, such as the Blackpool Tower, the Blackpool Illuminations, and a variety of restaurants, bars, and shops. The fireworks nights often coincide with other local events on the comedy carpet and surrounding areas, providing an even richer experience for visitors.

Usually – fireworks from the top of the tower are reserved for switch on night and some New year’s eve events… It’s unlikely we’ll see any fireworks from the top of the tower – but you never know!
